Music is something that has been around for centuries. There are many different types of music and many kinds of instruments that are used to create that music. From regular wooden sticks from trees to metal guitars, music has been something that has brought people together no matter how old or young they are.

Types of Musical Instruments

There are many many different kinds of musical instruments and each instrument family has many different instruments of their own. The 3 main types of musical instruments are stringed instruments, wind instruments, and percussion instruments.

Stringed Instruments

Stringed instruments produce sound from vibrating strings when someone plays the strings either by picking, plucking, using a bow, or another form of playing. The sound is usually produced because the body of the instrument has some kind of hollow enclosed area where the vibrations from the strings can be transmitted. When someone plays the body of the instrument vibrates with the air inside the enclosed area.

Wind Instruments

Wind instruments usually contain a resonator where air is sent and then vibrates creating the sound. It is usually played by blowing into a mouthpiece, usually a reed. There are many kinds of Wind Instruments including flute, trumpets, horns, saxophones, clarinet, trombones, and oboes.

Percussion Instruments

Percussion Instruments is played by striking or scraping the instrument with a beater. Percussion instruments are referred to as the "heartbeat" of the musical ensemble. It can be used in many different styles of music and a drum, which is a percussion instrument, can even in be used in marching bands. Some other common percussion instruments are bongo drums, tamborines, cymbals, and chimes.
